A Few Words From Our greens keeper June 2009

Hello Golfers!

The bermuda grass fairways and roughs seem to be greening up and growing except for some low laying drainage areas in the fairways. We will watch those areas closely and see if the bermuda grass is just delayed in growing or something more severe. If these areas are damaged from the winter, we will re-sod them from the Bermuda nursery we have on hole #4.

The green’s aerification on May 18th and 19th went smoothly for our crew. It should not take more than a week for the holes to heal over. We again used the Dry Ject Aerification method. This method uses high pressure water injection to puncture the greens, and then automatically fills the holes with dried bagged sand.

Around the Golf Shop

By Tom Maled June 2009

Golf is a game that has many attributes and reasons why people play the game, some for the competition, others, for the beautifully manicured grounds and still others for the camaraderie. The values of the game have endured for many years and have been passed down from golfing generation to golfing generation. The message, more important today then at any other time in history, is chalked full of vital life lessons in my opinion. Today the youth instead of being mentored by parents and elders, get the answers to their questions from peers or google online! Adults, most of which just took up the game, have entered the game without any instruction or history lessons. If is our job as golfers to educate the youth and adults alike in just what the meaning behind the game is all about!

First and foremost the game of golf is about MUTUAL RESPECT. Respect for one-self, one’s property, others and their property and the property shared by all (the golf course). We need a wake-up call to help us realize just what a good thing we have in the Valley View Golf Club and how we need to take good care of it for our kids and our children’s children. Second, the game revolved around being COURTEOUS. Manners are not only the order of the course but of civilized society as a whole. Third, HONESTY, it has been said that a lot can be told of a person by playing one round of golf with them. People will show their true nature during a round of golf.

I would like to add a fourth element to that quote RESPONSIBILITY. We need to be responsible in the game and to each other by doing what’s right for all and try not to see what we can get for ourselves. I’m not a pessimist, but sometimes you must call them as you see them. If I would sit back and say nothing, that would be wrong, so instead, here goes! We are all in this together and if we want to prosper and grow we need to be more responsible! Here is a reminder list of what every golfer is responsible for:

  1. Make sure that if you have to cancel a tee time, you call the golf shop as soon as you know you won’t be there. Hopefully, at least 24 hours in advance.
  2. Walker’s, please kick in the edges of your divots if you don’t have any sand to fill the divot with! And don’t take excessive practice swings.
  3. Don’t hit more than two shots from any one position at any time.
  4. Play ready golf when ever possible. (Ready golf is where you are ready to play when it’s your turn to play) allowing only 20 seconds for preparation and execution.
  5. Be courteous and patient of other golfers on the course.
  6. Do not take excessive practice swings that tear up the turf.
  7. Check in at the golf shop. Even if you are just joining a group at the turn please check in at the golf shop first!
  8. Please don’t litter!
  9. Please sand your divots!
  10. Please repair your ball mark and one other on every hole!
  11. Mark down your score at the next tee box instead of at the green you just finished on.

All these things are a good start to getting us back on track!
